Biographical Sketches


Edwin M. Stone, M.D., Ph.D. and Val C. Sheffield, M.D., Ph.D.

Ed Stone graduated from Rice University in 1978 with a bachelors degree in English and Biology. He attended medical school and graduate school at Baylor College of Medicine receiving his Ph.D. in Cell Biology in 1983 and his M.D. with honors in 1985. Following an internship at St. Joseph Hospital, he came to the University of Iowa for his Ophthalmology residency and Vitreoretinal Surgery fellowship. He joined the faculty in 1990 and was promoted to his present rank of Associate professor in 1994. Dr. Stone was named the DeBakey Scholar in 1984. He received the P.J. Leinfelder Award for Research in Ophthalmology in 1989 and 1990. In 1993, he was named The Research to Prevent Blindness Dolly Green Scholar and he was elected to the Macular Society in 1994. He received an Alcon Research Award in 1995. Dr. Stone is married and has two children.

Val Sheffield graduated from Brigham Young University in 1974 with a bachelors degree in Zoology and received a Masters degree in Developmental Biology from the same institution in 1977. He attended medical school and graduate school at the University of Chicago receiving his Ph.D. in Biochemistry in 1983 and his M.D. with honors in 1985. Following a residency in Pediatrics at the University of California at San Francisco, he stayed on to complete a postdoctoral fellowship. He joined the faculty at the University of Iowa in 1990 and was promoted to his present rank of Associate professor in 1994. Dr. Sheffield received the F. Howell Wright Award from the University of Chicago in 1985 and the Carver Clinician Scientist Award from the University of Iowa in 1990. Dr. Sheffield is married and has five children.
